Shailene Woodley & Rosario Dawson Lead Protest Against Oil Pipeline

Publish date: 2024-07-19

Shailene Woodley and Rosario Dawson attended the “Stop The Dakota Access Pipeline” protest at Union Square, in NYC, on August 7.

The $3.8 billion pipeline will interfere with Native American territory. The oil will run from North Dakota to Illinois. Many protesters include members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. They worry that an oil spill could contaminate the drinking water at the Standing Rock Reservation. Its location is at the North Dakota and South Dakota border, according to KSFY.

Shailene spoke about the pipeline many times on her Facebook page. She states, “We need to stand together; we need to wake up. We cannot let the fossil fuel industry continue to walk over all people in this country and especially Native American people.”

The protesters use the phrase, “Rez-spect Our Water” to promote their cause.

In a change.org petition online, a 13-year-old member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe shares her concerns. She states:

The proposed Dakota Access Pipeline would transport 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day, across four states. Oil companies keep telling us that this is perfectly safe, but we’ve learned that that’s a lie: from 2012-2013 alone, there were 300 oil pipeline breaks in the state of North Dakota.

You can sign the petition now to stand with the Native Americans!
