All you need to know about UK Music Video Awards 2018
On the 25th October at Camden’s iconic Roundhouse venue the UK Music Video Awards are taking place hosted by BUG frontman Adam Buxton. Since it first took place in 2008 the awards have been highlighting the best work and biggest achievements in music videos becoming an important event in the music video production calendar.
2017’s awards saw entries from over 30 territories taking the awards truly global but also highlighting some of the best new and also established British talent. It saw videos from Dua Lipa, Haim, Alt-J, Beck, Ray BLK and Kendrick Lemar winning awards. Along with British directors Oscar Hudson and Matilda Finn winning Best Director and Best New Director respectively. The diversity of the awards see winners in different music genres, technical and craft achievement, live performance films and interactive videos amongst others.
The UKMVAs are teaming up once again with MAMA Youth Project giving trainees the chance to film and produce content for this year’s awards. Panalux, Time Based Arts and Worldwide Production Agency and Locomotion are back on board as partners once again.
There’s a heavy female presence in this year’s UK Music Video Awards nominations with Florence + The Machine and Sevdaliza leading with 5 nominations. Björk, Chaka Khan, Christine and the Queens and Rosalía have 4 nominations each. In the Best Artist category Björk, Christine and the Queens, Florence + The Machine, Janelle Monáe and Sigrid face off against Young Fathers for the awards. Childish Gambino and director Hiro Murai win 3 nominations (Best International Urban Video, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography) for This Is America. Other notable music nominees are Dizzee Rascal, Years & Years, Wolf Alice, The Carters’, Tyler The Creator and Jack White.
Longform and short form live music performance films with Biffy Clyro, Arctic Monkeys and Justin Timberlake featuring on the shortlists. Directing talents featuring on the shortlists include Oscar Hudson, Dave Meyers and Jean-Baptiste Mondino whilst photographers Autumn De Wilde and Olivia Rose also gain mentions.
